District Tate Shield Competition 2004

[Tate Shield challenge]

A Scout attempts the “Minefield” base

The “last ever” Wallington, Carshalton & District Tate Shield Competition took place on Saturday 13th November 2004 at Frylands Wood Scout Campsite. The night was clear, with the temperature dipping low enough to cause puddles in the car park to freeze over.

For this event, the final Wallington, Carshalton & District Scout event before the merger with Sutton & Cheam District, two teams from Sutton were invited to join the fourteen teams from Wallington & Carshalton. All but one Troop from Wallington, Carshalton & District were represented.

With sixteen teams in the competition, sixteen bases were run. The bases this year included Giant Stride, Single Rope Bridge, First Aid 1, Crate Walk, Bungee Ropes, Double Rope Bridge, Air Rifle/Pistol Shooting, Electric Fence, Horizontal Mug Tree, Minefield, Bell Box, Pulley Incident, Map Jigsaw, Compass, First Aid 2 and Go-Carts.

The competition started at 5:30pm and, once all the leaders had found the bases they were to man, ran smoothly. The competition finished slightly later than planned at about 12:30am.
