Chairman’s Notes
The Saint George’s Day parade this year was blessed with fine weather and it was good to see the District well represented. Standing with the Mayor of Sutton it was a memorable occasion with the District (1st Wallington) Band leading, to see the flags being carried down the High Street with all the young people following. Many parents and others joined in the march also with the service that followed. Holding the event in Manor Park gives an opportunity for the public to see that Scouting in Sutton is well and truly active. All Leaders should be proud of the work that we do for young people.
At the service the County Commissioner, Ian Newbery, presented a retirement gift from the District to John Perkins and thanked him for all that he had done as the District Commissioner of Sutton.
With the publicity that Scouting has had during the past year and with events held such as the St George’s Day Parade more young people want to join – in fact some Groups have waiting lists. An important and urgent part of our Development Plans for both District and Groups must be finding leaders and others to help in so many ways, but remember a quote by Baden-Powell: “Softly Catchee Monkey”.
Young people look to Scouting for fun and adventure and, when asked, those of Scout age say they very much look forward to camping with lots of activities and cooking on open fires.
Good summer action to all.

Network
Sutton Network Hit the Czech Republic
Sutton Network had an awesome end to last term with six members attending the PAGGS YLC in the Czech Republic for 18–30 year old Scouts and Guides from the twin towns of Sutton. We left on the Thursday before Easter and met up with old friends from PAGGS at Prague airport and spent the weekend at Radhost Camp in Horni Jeleni. On the way to the campsite we had to find some of the sights in Prague and swap a pin for the best present we could get for the leader of the camp.
![[Network Picture]](flysheet-2008-06-p04.jpg)
Good Friday was spent in the Krknose Mountains on the Polish border in the snow. It was brilliant playing in the snow, having snowball fights, sledging down the mountain on wooden sleds while keeping a hollow Easter egg in one piece to claim points for our teams and having a snowman building competition. That evening we had a Disco with a DJ from Pardubice.
Saturday morning was spent watching the ex-police sniffer dogs and riot dogs, which were very clever, then we had a shooting competition with laser guns shooting creatures in a computer game on the big screen again earning points for our teams. This was followed by a Scouting skills contest through the woods in our teams with different tasks including, air rifle shooting, throwing plastic grenades, a Kim’s game, a navigation exercise, first aid and tea at the local Scout hunt. After dinner some people from the local brewery came and ran a bingo evening.
On the Sunday we met the mayor of Horni Jeleni, to whom we presented our gifts and went for a walk around town with. In the afternoon we made our traditional desserts for the Easter feast and the girls painted Easter eggs while the boys made Easter whips from willow with ribbons on. That evening we had an Easter feast with a traditional Czech dinner of pork and dumplings followed by our traditional desserts including crepes, apple crumble, shortbread and lemon cream and biscuits. After dinner there was traditional dancing, which the mayor joined in with, and a disco.

Easter Monday was full of Czech Easter traditions. We set out on horses and buggies to the local village, the boys with their whips ready. The tradition is that men go and visit women on Easter Monday before 12 noon and they are allowed to whip them as it makes them younger as the youth of the willow branches is transferred. In return the women give them an Easter egg or a shot of rum. We visited different houses and had lovely nibbles and rum.
On our return from the morning’s activities some people chilled out and some went for a walk to a wooden church. An early night was in order as it was an early start for the flight home the following morning.
After a brilliant weekend I stayed in the Czech Republic to complete my Explorer Belt Expedition with a fellow member of PAGGS from Scotland. We travelled across the country to Prague walking the majority of the way with our rucksacks – camping in snow then sunshine and meeting many amazing people along the way. We spent one night in a hut behind a pub and another in a Czech Summer house by the river with a couple we met who were from Prague. The scenery was wonderful and we completed all our tasks from visiting a glass works to finding out what projects were being undertaken at an observatory. To find out more about what we got up to see the next issue of FOCUS.
Network hasn’t stopped since we have been back and we have been bowling at City Limits and climbing at High Sports and I took part in the Windsor parade with Queens Scouts from around the country. This term’s programme has been increased and Sutton Network are now meeting every Thursday night this term with lots of brilliant activities on the programme including Laserquest, Rowing, Gliding, a trip to Diggerland, a computer games evening, cooking and camps on Brownsea Island and in the Yorkshire Dales.

1st Wallington 100th Celebrations
As was reported in the last edition of the Sutton District Newsletter, together with photos, 1st Wallington held an Open Day on 29th March at our HQ in Ruskin Road to celebrate 100 years of the Group. On behalf of 1st Wallington I would like to thank all the leaders in the Sutton District who took the trouble to reply to my invitation letter, to thank the many leaders who visited us on the day and to thank those Groups that very kindly sent us their best wishes. Your support was much appreciated by everyone at 1st Wallington.
Over the weekend of 4th to 8th April we held our centenary camp at Walton Firs. Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and Leaders enjoyed an active weekend with the snow on Sunday morning being an added bonus.

1st Wallington at the centenary camp at Walton Firs taken on the Sunday morning after flag break and Scouts Own.
After extensive research of the Group archives we have produced a history of 1st Wallington. The 64 page book contains a fascinating insight in to the start and development of the Group as well as bringing the story up to date. The 1st Wallington archives are extensive and provide a very good record of not only the Scout Group but also provide an insight as to how life has changed over the past 100 years. The book is for sale at £8 plus 90p p&p. The fact that we have such an extensive and comprehensive archive is mainly due to the effort of our President, Andrew Neden, who over many years gathered together much of the material from past members of the Group.
Once again, our thanks to Sutton District Members for their support.
