Teams consisted of four Cubs: one 8-year-old, two 9-year-olds and one 10-year-old. The competition consisted of the following bases:

Pioneering
Cubs needed to make a simple structure using four different knots.
Communications
Cubs needed to remember a message and to follow directions given by means other than speech.
First Aid
Cubs needed to know what to do if they found an accident. Cubs needed to know whether to call 999 or not (normally they wouldn’t unless the patient was unconscious or was really badly hurt). Cubs needed to make the patient comfortable and reassure the patient. Cubs needed to identify what was wrong with the patient. If the patient was bleeding Cubs needed to stop the bleeding by either raising the part that was bleeding to slow the flow or by applying direct pressure by using plasters or bandages.
Tracking
Cubs needed to know the tracking signs and needed to be able to make a tracking course using the signs.
Compass
Cubs needed to follow a course made using simple bearings on a compass.
Tents
Cubs needed to be able to bang in a peg, put a groundsheet in a tent, identify parts of a tent and know about tent care.
Fire lighting
Cubs needed to be able to light a fire under supervision.
Nature
Cubs needed to match the leaves, seeds and names of ten common trees.

To help Cubs prepare for the competition there was a Challenge Trophy Pack Quiz that could be attempted by the whole Pack at a Cub meeting.
