Centenary District Camp 2007
Newsletter No. 3
Hello and welcome to the third edition of this newsletter keeping you up to date with your District camp. May we just start by wishing all of you a very merry Christmas and an ever better new year from all of the camp team. And as we all soberly see in the new year just cast a thought that District camp is only 146 days away!!!
Making Our Mark
We launched this fund raiser back in the autumn and so far the response has been great – one or two Beaver leaders kindly offering to eat the Smarties for the Beavers so that they didn’t get poorly from eating to many sweets – how kind of them. We are looking forward to hearing how you are all going to rise to the challenge, and don’t forget to send your stories and pictures to Paul Whitcher (District Press Officer). It would be very helpful if everyone that is going to take part could get in touch and then we will send you out the relevant forms for sponsorship etc. Just to remind you that Making our Mark runs from 15th January 2007 to 24th April 2007.
Badge Competition
Let us start by saying a very big thank you to everyone that took part in this competition and their leaders for supporting them in doing this. We were very disappointed at the amount of entries, or lack of them, less than 10% of the District bothered to respond. Whilst less entries does make it a little easier to judge this competition, it was still a tough choice with some great entries to choose from. So if members of your section made the effort to enter a design to our fun competition then please do pass on our thanks (from the whole team), and we just wished we could have made you all winners. The winning entry was created by Luke Brandon of 1st Belmont. Also our congratulations go to the Tarn family from 3rd Carshalton whose design was picked to be used as a logo for this event.
Activities
This is perhaps one of the most important items at this event as it will fill the biggest part of the weekend. That is why we have had a team dedicated to just dealing with this. They have been working very hard looking into what we can offer all of our young people.
Dependent on whether your group books in as a two night or a three night camp will determine how many half day activity sessions you will receive: 2 night camp – 3 sessions, 3 night camp – 4 sessions, plus everyone will get to take part in monday morning’s Group Olympics.
The Scouts and Explorer Scouts activities will mainly take place off-site; Cubs will be a little of both and Beavers (plus any day visitors) will be fully on-site.
What activities I hear you cry, well so far we have arranged horse riding, caving, canoeing, sailing, power boating, rock climbing, swimming, bowling, ice skating and a visit to Brooklands Museum. Not everyone will be able to do all of these but we hope to give people some choice. There will be lots going on site as well: giant inflatables, pillow fights, archery, canoeing, shooting, pioneering, frisbee golf, adventure course, backwoods cooking, quiz, craft activities and much much more. And as it becomes confirmed we will let you know. One thing I do know Simon is trying to arrange is bat watching. We hope to offer the chance to both Scouts and Cubs to do a badge whilst at camp. But if you have an idea or could put something on for us then please do shout, it’s your camp as much as ours.
More details will follow in January.
District Support
The response to our appeal for support in the last newsletter has been met with a stony silence which was very disappointing. We cannot run District camp without support. Please as we come back after Christmas and we start counting down the days can we all make a push for this please.
And Finally
Its looking good with regards all groups being represented at this event, so very well done, and just a reminder we will be wanting your estimated numbers by 1st February.
